Punch and Judy

MUSEU DA MARIONETA - Claustro
4 May at 9pm (Friday) | 5 May at 4pm (Saturday)

Puppeteer: Rod Burnett Technique: Hand puppets Language: English and Spanish Time: Aprox. 40 min. For audiences over: M/6

Rod Burnett is regarded as one of the leading performers of the Punch show in the UK and has performed it all over the world. He is regarded as one of the leading exponents of the art of Punch & Judy with his show steeped in the traditions of Commedia dell' Arte and performed with hilarious, irreverent and sometimes shocking black humour.

Mr. Punch meets various characters - Judy (his wife), their baby (who ends up as sausages), a policeman, a crocodile, a hangman and the devil - and deals with them all in his savage and violent style. The show is anarchic, enthralling, and above all, hilarious.

The earliest recorded evidence we have of Punch in England is from the 17th century Diarist Samuel Pepys, who wrote about it after a visit to Covent Garden, on the 9th May 1662. Mr. Punch is still knocking them dead after 350 years! Let’s celebrate! “That’s the way to do it!”.

BIO
Rod Burnett has been a performer of Punch & Judy since 1977. He was trained as a sculptor, gaining a first class honours degree from Falmouth Art College in 1977. His degree show involved the construction of several large pieces in which tiny human figures played out simple scenes, animated by ingeniously complex machinery. Lodgings with the local Punch and Judy man gave Rod the idea of replacing the machinery with himself as animator, and Rod began to develop an interest in puppetry. While lecturing at Exeter Art College, he worked with the community theatre group Fair Exchange. Rod then embarked on a solo career, and, in 1987, established Storybox Theatre.
Tanya Landman joined the company in 1992, and for several years Rod and Tanya performed together – touring schools with Storybox Theatre, and European festivals with Tantalus – a company set up to produce work for adult audiences. The birth of two children in recent years has meant a return to solo touring for Rod. Tanya continues to administrate the company, and has also started writing, and she is now a well-known writer and illustrator of children’s books.
“Puppetry is my medium…It’s my personal journey, and one of my reasons for being. I love it”. - Rod Burnett

An audiovisual five-minute-fast-food-menu! Exclusively served for only two spectators. A fresh puppet theatre about life & death, about heaven & hell, about watching & being watched - spiced with modern, perspective-changing projection techniques. Deliciously seasoned and enchantingly performed by Bruno Pilz.

A man in front of the television and the spectators watching him...

“Lacrimosa“ is a dense audiovisual puppet theatre, inspired by the idea that you could watch your life again after death as a kind of film.

“Bruno Pilz will be heard of again. He played a tiny five-minute show for two spectators, two puppets… A mirror effect transferred the image of the spectators to the other side of the stage... Ingenious.” - Penny Francis, Animations online

Inspired by this kind of illusion, he began studying puppet theatre at the acting-school "Ernst Busch" in 2006 in Berlin.
Ever since his childhood he was fascinated by visual effects in video-games and movies, which influenced the aesthetics and dramatization of his works with light and shadow.

BIO
A Tarumba - Teatro de Marionetas is a Portuguese professional theatre company, created in 1993, with artistic direction of Luís Vieira. Its purpose is to spread and promote puppet and visual theatre. Tarumba means to be confused or perplexed, astounded, fascinated, stunned, astonished… and expresses how the company generally envisions puppetry art. The artistic project comprises: creation and artistic experimentation; the International Festival of Puppetry and Animated Forms - FIMFA Lx organization; and training and research with the creation of a Puppetry Arts Centre | Centro de Artes da Marioneta – CAMa.
The company has been performing all over Portugal and abroad, in many international festivals. Since 2001, organizes annually the International Festival of Puppetry and Animated Forms - FIMFA Lx, that has been known by the quality of its programme and multiplicity of proposals, where the puppets have a special role (shows, workshops, conferences, artistic residences, exhibitions).
During these 19 years of activity, beyond all the acquired experience, Tarumba created an important artistic collection, consisting of puppets made by the company, for each play, old and ‘historical’ puppets, toy theatres (originals from 19th century and beginnings of 20th century), theatre books, especially about puppet theatre, photographs, programs and posters, that are present in the Puppetry Arts Centre | Centro de Artes da Marioneta – CAMa.

The Field of Memory e The Zone of Stones
SÃO LUIZ TEATRO MUNICIPAL - Sub-Palco
12, 13 May at 5pm and 7pm (Saturday and Sunday)

Two experimental projects on Beckett’s universe by two important British theatrical scholars and researchers, Mischa Twitchin and Penny Francis.

THE FIELD OF MEMORY

Text: Samuel Beckett, from “What Where” Music: Franz Schubert, from “Winterreise” accompaniment, played by Gerald Moore Voices: José Luís Ferreira, Friedhelm Becker and Samuel Beckett Performer: Mischa Twitchin Technique: Mixed Language: Portuguese, English and Germany Time: 6 min. For audiences over: M/12 Limited audience

Describing the benefits of revising his last stage work, “What Where”, for its television version, Beckett offers implicit criticism of theatrical paraphernalia. In this performance, theatre is itself shown without the “superfluities” of production - with no set, no actors, no curtain, no technical apparatus. All that appears on stage (“first without words” and then, again, “with words”) is simply the back of a wooden chair and a pair of hands, with one domestic light whose fading up and down, together with the animation of the hands, provides the “drama”. This is accompanied by a sound track offering a narrative that includes Beckett’s commentary on the limitations and possibilities of the theatrical performance of his play. Alongside Beckett’s own voice, the sound sources include fragments from “What Where”, one of the voices from Beckett’s own German television production, and phrases from Schubert’s “Winterreise” accompaniment played by Gerald Moore (which was part of Beckett’s own record collection).

THE ZONE OF STONES

Text: Samuel Beckett, from “Ill Seen Ill Said” Music: J.S. Bach-Johannes Brahms, from “Chaconne” (BWV 1004), piano transcription for left hand, played by Paul Wittgenstein, and Franz Schubert, from the “Winterreise” accompaniment, played by Gerald Moore Performer: Penny Francis Voice: José Luís Ferreira Technique: Mixed Language: Portuguese Time: 30 min. For audiences over: M/12 Limited audience

This production is a collaboration with Penny Francis.

“The Zone of Stones”: This performance (which draws its title from Beckett’s “Ill Seen Ill Said”) reflects on the near invisibility of old age in today’s theatre. Offering a time to experience the relation between the (ill) said and the (ill) seen - as between audience and actor - the focus of the performance is simply upon the hands of an 80year old performer. This absorption in a series of simple physical images is juxtaposed with the verbal images of the sound track – imagining, through the audience’s own associations, the time of dying. The soundtrack also features fragments of a Bach Chaconne arranged by Brahms for the left hand (played by Paul Wittgenstein), and from Schubert’s “Winterreise” accompaniment (played by Gerald Moore).

Teatro Dom Roberto

JARDIM DA ESTRELA
12, 13 May at 5.30pm (Saturday and Sunday)

Puppeteer: Sara Henriques Puppets: Rui Pedro Rodrigues Company sponsored by: Governo de Portugal / Secretário de Estado da Cultura - DGArtes Technique: Hand puppets Language: Portuguese Time: Aprox. 20 min. For audiences over: For all ages

The traditional Teatro Dom Roberto is back again on the streets of Lisbon, but now the puppeteer is a woman!

The Teatro Dom Roberto has been performed for about three centuries at fairs, pilgrimage spots, beaches and streets. The Portuguese glove puppet Dom Roberto is the cousin of Punch, Polichinelle, Pulcinella, Petrouska... The puppeteer uses a swazzle in his mouth to amplify his voice and produce remarkable sound effects. An unique opportunity to see this Portuguese traditional puppet.

The Barber: At his wedding day, Dom Roberto decides to go to the barber to have his beard shaved. After many incidents, the barber does his work and finally presents him the bill. Dom Roberto refuses to pay. They argue and fight and Dom Roberto ends up killing the barber. Death comes to take the victim away and wants to take Dom Roberto as well. A life and death fight takes place, and Dom Roberto obviously wins, and kills Death.

The Bullfight: This play doesn’t actually have a dramatic plot, it describes the different stages in a Portuguese bullfight and its typical characters: the campino, the bullfighter, the horserider and, of course, the bull.

For Giuseppe Antonio Borgnis (1781-1863), mechanics is defined as the science of balance and movement. "Mechanics" is a cycle of research and creation from the study of mechanical engineering. The practice is a source of learning: the objects are designed, built and tested, the results are analyzed and their synthesis are refocused. This process results in objects that expose the mechanical practice through a universe of poetic images.

“Mecânica 1 – maquete” is the first result of this cycle. In a structure no larger than the two performer’s bodies, a succession of events generated by the manipulation of the various elements that compose the object.

A short form about the images in our lives.

We eat images and we have no time to digest them. We are swallowing fast opinions, concepts, ideals and prefabricated dreams that are abruptly offered to us wherever we look.
We live distractedly conditioned by the images that devoured us and we are engage with the fasten process of life comunication that so desperately we want to reach.

Theatre Noir is about the theater and cinema, but this time the theatre is made of paper and cinema is made with cardboard objects and tape. There aren’t video cameras or projectors. There are flashlights and the viewer. Everything is mixed and lights up the stage for a femme fatale, a detective and a boxer, who form the trio of this romantic and tragic play. But there are more characters: one tear and some blood also appear among scenarios and dark places at night, outlining a bloody and fatalistic story. Cigarettes, lipstick and guns for whatever comes. To love is to die and who dies for love is foolish.

Laugh, laugh, laugh…

“…I’m laughing to keep from crying
And for those who do not know I’m Rio* singing”

With the music: "Goodbye Batucada" Carmen Miranda says farewell. The diva that will live forever - in the movies, music and many other printed influences in different arts and artists - leaves orphans all objects that animated her lush turbans. Without the frenzy of her talking hands, her contagious smile and exotic hip movements, all the fruits, feathers, flowers, ribbons and colored beads had to move on. What to do when the spotlight is off?

(*) – “I’m Rio singing” in Portuguese (sou Rio a cantar) as a double meaning. It means that the city of Rio de Janeiro is singing and, at the same time, that I’m smiling while singing.

BIO
Luís Hipólito, journalist and actor in progress (born on the 11th of July, in Lisbon, “the city of my heart”).
In 1995, he graduated in Agronomic Engineering, and specialized in tropical and subtropical studies.
He has been working as television journalist for 12 years, and ever since he can remember he’s been doing “work in progress” theatre… Passions cannot be explained! He has worked in cinema for Manoel de Oliveira with Catherine Deneuve, “a lifetime experience for life and for the entire life”. In Theatre, he has searched with Lucia Sigalho for the limits in “Sensurround”, for the others realities in “Realidade Real” and everything and nothing in “Procura-se”. He has done broadcasting, translating and subtitling. He has written about music and dance for the newspaper “Expresso” and authored several Chronicles for the magazines Cosmopolitan and Gingko. He likes challenges and, even knowing that “The perfection is the enemy of the good”, he doesn’t stop trying. “I haven’t been everywhere but it’s on my list” by Susan Sontag describes perfectly his DNA.
In 2010, he was invited by A Tarumba - Teatro de Marionetas to attend the Workshop “The actor facing the object”, directed by Agnès Limbos and, since then, he has been working regularly with this Company. By invitation of A Tarumba - Teatro de Marionetas he created the show “Oh! Please!” that premiered in FIMFA Lx11.
