From the late 1910s and for nearly five decades, a wide family of puppeteers -the Silvents- earned their living by taking their puppet show from one fair to another. The star of this show was a peculiar glove puppet called Barriga Verde (Green Belly), which became extremely popular in every corner of Galicia.

In order to restore the memory of the Silvents and the character they created, a group of puppeteers decide to build a replica of the Silvents' old wooden theatre and put it on the road again. Digging deep into Barriga Verde's genealogy, the film takes us in an international journey meaning to explore the common roots of popular puppet theatre in Europe. Although he was oblivious to it, our little hero had a number of
cousins spread all over the continent...

Documentary 61m, 2012 Language: Spanish
Director and script: Pedro Nares Photography: Ernest F. Sala Film editing: Ramón García Bermúdez Production: Pedro Ramón N. Sirvent, Joaquín García Baídos With: Toni Rumbau, Pep Gómez, Mila Cubero, Albert Tort, Jordi Bertrán, Jesús Atienza, Manel Martí, Pilar Gálvez, Marta Soro, Jordi Ráfols, Carles Codina, Oriol Pont, Carlos López, Jaume Tomillero

After the movie, the documentary’s director will answer the questions from the audience.

Pepe Otal (Albacete 1946 - Sardinia 2007) was a controversial figure, with his long white beard and pipe in the corner of his mouth, one day in 1972 Pepe Otal decided to settle in Barcelona, where he became a pupil of the great Harry Tozer. Soon after, in 1974 founded the Grupo-Taller de Marioneta and influenced by Peter Schuman and Bread Puppet Theatre he took the puppets into the streets. His idea was to show that his art could be directed at adult audiences.

Pepe Otal died in Sardinia during an international puppet festival, shortly after the last performance of his version of “The Divine Comedy” with Pep Gómez, when he suffered a heart attack.
An artist with an unusual vitality, he brought new forms and elements to his profession, conceiving shows where he melted humour, sometimes provocative, with tenderness. A trajectory that led him throughout the stages from all over the world and whose finale, like the masters of theater, surprised Pepe after the end of the performance of his latest production.

A documentary that is a journey through the life and work of Pepe Otal, considered one of most important Spanish puppeteers, who has spent his entire career and teaching in Barcelona. It was in his school-laboratory that puppeteers emerged as Jordi Bertran, Luis Fellini, Carles Canyelles, Josep Silvestre, Georgina Castro, Damian Privitera, Jordi Pinar, Joëlle Nogués, among many others.

This documentary directed by Pedro Nares features his many facets, through interviews with Pepe otal, in addition to several testimonies of his friends, who worked with him or at his side learning the art of puppetry. Several witnesses who share their memories, anecdotes and humorous experiences alongside this brilliant artist, but also funny and controversial.
